Who are you and where are you from?

Lial. I’m an independent music artist from London

What inspired you to get into music?

It was always just there as something I did. I did a lot of classical singing when I was younger but what I was listening to was pop and indie music which is why I didn’t go down the classics route – you have to do what you love.

What have you done?

I released my debut EP, Heart Scars about 18 months ago and am now gearing up to my next EP, Made to Break, in the summer which I have co-written with Gregor McWilliam. We’ve had some nice feedback on the first single and super excited to get more music out, and starting write the next EP as well.

What are you like live?

I am not someone who dances around – I just try to be really present and in the moment, wherever that takes me, with energy and openness.

What makes you different?

I try to make music that is authentic to who I am and what I like – I don’t try to be like anything else. I have an unusual purity to my voice which I have battled with because it’s hard to have an edge to it but now I just go with that and embrace it as it’s different. 

Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

Streaming but I also listen to vinyls. I listen to music whenever I can but find streaming does change the way I engage with music whereas listening to vinyl feels more active, and you’re listening to a piece of art as a whole. 

What have you been listening to?

I’m loving the new Oh Wonder album, Låpsley, Vérité, Sody – there’s so much great music coming out right now. I’m also getting really into Bat for Lashes at the moment.

What are your aspirations for the future?

Everything live in is on hold for now but I am hoping that by the end of the year I can start gigging. With everything that’s happening now I am going to take as much online as I can with some live stuff on instagram or facebook. I am getting ready for the EP release in the summer and also writing quite a lot now with so much home time.
