AAA Music Approved: Dogtooth

| On 07, Apr 2020

Who are you and where are you from?

Dogooth. John Hewitson: lead guitar/vocals, Craig Morrison: bass, Robert Lang: drums/backing vocals.

A chance meeting between myself at 11 years old and a 12 year old Craig at a scooter rally led to the beginning of Dogtooth.  We were both delighted to have found someone the same age into the same kind of music.  The Jam, The Who, The Clash etc.  We met for practise every Saturday and met Robert (Boab) about 8 months later.  Boab was only meant to play along with us for the afternoons rehearsal and now 6 years later he’s still here!

What inspired you to get into music?

My parents got me a guitar for my tenth birthday and Ive never looked back since.  Noel Gallagher inspired me to learn to play.  Craig’s dad plays bass and Craig has been playing since he was about 3 years old!  When we met, Craig’s bass was bigger than him!!  Boab played pro youth football until aged 13 and then decided that drumming was more important!

What have you done?

We have played around 400 live gigs across the UK in some fantastic venues.  We have released 2 singles and an EP on vinyl with all other tracks available on digital platforms.  We are proud of the fact that everything we have done so far has been completely self funded.  Any funds that we make from selling tickets, merch or music goes straight back into making  more music!

We are extremely proud to have been involved with charities that support Teenage Cancer Trust, Mental Health Awareness and Homelessness.

What are you like live?

We love playing live!! That’s what we do best!! We have been very fortunate to have played in some fantastic venues across the UK.  The Glasgow Barrowlands always a favourite.  The Cavern in Liverpoool was pretty special too.  We have supported a lot of different genres of music:  Heaven 17, Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam, Hipsway, Heaven 17, The Selecter, John Power (Cast) and a few others.  We are looking forward to supporting Shambolics on 14th March.

What makes you different?

We are happy with the fact that we feel our music can’t really be pigeon holed.  All three of us like and listen to loads of different bands/genres and take a little influence from them all.  Still writing, rehearsing and performing we are still developing our sound.

Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

We all have spotify, digital makes it so easy to discover new bands which we all love to do!  If I’m honest though there is just something really special about a nice shiny vinyl.  We have had two 7” singles and a 10” EP out on vinyl and hope to get more out eventually too.

What have you been listening to?

All three of us love discovering new bands!  I spend my spare time either playing myself or going to gigs.  Loads happening in the Glasgow music scene all the time.  Favourites for us all at the moment are The Blinders, Molchat Doma, The Rifles.  In all honesty if we like it we’ll listen to it!

What are your aspirations for the future?

Our latest single “Cut” is due for release on 22/02/20.  We are back in the recording studio this weekend to start work on another.  Obviously our ultimate goal would be to put out an album of our own but for now keep on gigging and making music!
