Crows – Live @ Waterfront Studio

Friday 29th November, Norwich
I first caught Crows at the end of their set at the Latitude Festival this last summer and thought I really should have seen the whole set, so a chance to see them in Norwich as one of the most compelling bands around at present wasn’t to be missed.
Supporting Crows were Cambridge based shoegazer’s, Lemondaze who sounded great with their fuzzy glowing hook laden noise. Second on were Lumerand if you like a complete messy punk heavy racket then they were for you, but they were great to watch and very photogenic.
Hot on the heels of supporting IDLES back in April Crows enter the stage for their own headline tour of intimate venues and the cosiness of the Waterfront Studio was perfect for this type of gig. Starting with the relentless intensity of the title track of new album ‘Silver Tongues’, singer James Cox lurches and shakes the modest but lively crowd with a 2 microphone attack. He has the charisma and the ability to hold the crowd at will. Later on he even joins the crowd with his stand up mike to let random people have a shouty sing (or rather scream). The energy does not let up for the whole 45 minute set, with the songs having a great power and listenability and ended with the brilliant Joy Division inspired ‘Chain Of Being’.
Although the album ‘Silver Tongues’ is excellent, it doesn’t show this because as a live unit they sound at the top of their game as one of Britain’s most thrilling new bands. If you like your gigs intense and brutal then Crows will deliver.
