Paulaa - Interview

Who are you and where are you from?

Paulaa. I am a London-based singer/songwriter.

What inspired you to get into music?

I’ve always been attracted to music, singing came first, instrument (piano) second, and
writing came soon after. Music has always fascinated and drawn me in. In terms of my
genre, it happened very naturally. When I’m writing I love experimenting… I follow my
musical instinct. R&B, 90s trip-hop, and pop have all definitely influenced my music. I feel
like I connected with elements of these genres and processed them in my own way. I also
find artists such as Nina Simone, Prince, Massive Attack really influential.

What have you done?

I’ve recently released my new singles ‘Commit’ and ‘Know You’ from my upcoming EP. I’m
really excited to share more music… in fact my new single ‘All These Stories’ is out today!

What are you like live?

I haven’t been on a tour yet.. that’s still ahead of me, but I’ve performed gigs all over London
in places like The Bedford, The Barfly, The Hospital Club… There is quite a bit of contrast
in my performances… I’m quite expressive… there are times where I move a lot and I’m
very energetic, but sometimes I just sit down at the piano during the set and the energy is
slightly different.

What makes you different?

Finding my sound took years of exploring and experimenting. I followed what felt right and
what I identified with. I arrived at a point where I feel I understand my musical identity and
hopefully people who listen to my music will hear something unique/different about my music
in the way it’s written, in the sounds I use, the way I express it…

Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

I get a balance of all three; I listen to music on vinyl, Spotify and I buy it on iTunes… Things
are evolving and we move with change. I think there is something beautiful about having a
physical copy and in terms of vinyl it’s just a different sonic experience. But I also think it’s
great how easy it is to share, access and listen to so much music on the streaming services
like Spotify or to buy music on iTunes and create your digital library. They help give people a
platform. As long as I have a bit of all the three I’m happy.

What have you been listening to?

I listen to loads of different music, but definitely Sza’s Ctrl is one of my favourite albums at
the moment. And in terms of new discoveries… I recently heard Freya Ridings’s ‘Lost
Without You’ and really like it.

What are your aspirations for the future?

I’m very excited for my EP to come out later this year. Can’t wait to share more music.
