THE COMPUTERS – Want the News? Here’s the Blues

The Computers - Review

Want the News? Here’s the Blues is the explosive new EP from punk rockers The Computers. Their sound is an eclectic mix of soul, funk and rock and roll. This ace EP is laced with catchy hooks and their cover of Devo’s ‘Whip It’ adds a touch of diversity in the form of an 80s classic that is mirrored in ‘It’s Over You’. Singer Al’s vocals soar like a sonic tsunami, rivalling Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant elevating their unique blend of rock and soul in rock and roll intensity.

Title track is a groovy funk infused anthem that could bring even the most subdued rocker to bust a move. Speaking about the EP singer Al Kershaw says: “The first line of this song states ‘times are hard yes things are tough all over’ and they really are”, however the track’s upbeat sensibility certainly doesn’t make it seem that way. Driven by heavily distorted guitars and bass line, ‘Crucifixed On You’ has the sexually charged feeling of QOTSA’s ‘Smooth Sailing’, where ‘It’s Over You’ closes the album with a dark and brooding synthpop anthem that showcases The Computers’ versatility.
