ROSEAU - Interview

Who are you and where are you from?

ROSEAU. I’m originally from Colchester, but have been living in London on and off for the last seven years. I used to play in a band called Peter & Kerry but it’s on hiatus while we both work on solo projects.

What inspired you to get into music?

I’ve always been around music and always been drawn to it. It’s one of the only things that I can do without getting distracted – you just kind of get sucked in. There is nothing more satisfying than finishing a piece of work and then being like, ‘Shit, I made a song – how the fuck did this come out of my brain’.

What have you done?

I’ve learnt to be proud of everything I’ve released, even if I’m not into it any more (which happens a lot). I think the biggest compliment for me is when somebody takes the time to write and let you know that something you made helped them through something.

What are you like live?

I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in some amazing tours supporting Laura Mvula, Lianne La Havas and Lucy Rose. My favourite gig was probably Botanique supporting Lucy Rose: beautiful venue and quite possibly the nicest crowd I’ve ever come across.

What makes you different?

I don’t know what makes me different, I’ve never really thought about it – I just make what’s in my head.

Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

I pretty much come from the last generation of physical buyers. I love having something I can hold, it makes it more precious, you take better care of it and it becomes an event when you take the time to sit down and listen to records. I do download and stream too, but it’s not the same.

What have you been listening to?

I’ve been obsessing on just one track over the last week or so: Julia Holter ‘Feel You’. It’s got a slight ’70s Carole King vibe, coupled with a really cinematic atmosphere. It’s just beautiful.

What are your aspirations for the future?

I want to play plenty of gigs in plenty of different places, then take a few months out to start getting ideas together for a second album.

ROSEAU’s LP Salt is out September 18th via Big Dada. She will support Shura at London’s Electric Brixton on September 17th. Click here for more info…
