Portico is a curious reincarnation derived from highly acclaimed Portico Quartet. While Portico Quartet tended to work in experimental jazz, the current project of Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick and Jack Wyllie is even less restrained by the limits of genres.
The ‘101’ single is taken from the Portico album called Living Fields. This record was released on April 6 via Ninja Tune.
‘101’ is a calm ambient track driven by the mesmerizing voice of Joe Newman of Alt-J. Vocals possess sufficient space in the track with the disturbing percussion noises going along with them. Preaching in some moments of the track and mourning in the others, they move the dramaturgy of ‘101’ from suppressed despair to timid hope.
The track wanders through the melancholic electronic landscapes and active synthesised rhythms that are capable to lead Portico to new exciting perspectives for their music.
