THE TWILIGHT SAD – I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want

| On 07, Apr 2015

Following the release of their second album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave, Glasgow trio The Twilight Sad released their single ‘I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want’.

Lyrically bleak with a trace of paranoia for good measure, the single is an exploration of crumbling relationships. Whilst singer James Graham has noted that the band “don’t write pop songs”, instrumentally and melodically ‘I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want’ blurs the lines between pop and indie.

With a keyboard line that tangles with Andy Macfarlane’s guitar to dance over Graham’s vocals, the track’s cheerful instrumentals belie its embittered lyrics. As Graham mocks “silly little girl’s gone shy” towards the end of the song the keys continue their upbeat riff, supported by tight drumming from Mark Devine. The effect is a beautifully layered track where contrasting elements serve to highlight one another rather than undermine.

Despite critical acclaim for their previous efforts, The Twilight Sad have so far been overlooked by the mainstream. As ‘I Could Give You All That You Don’t Want’ demonstrates, this is the mainstream’s tragic loss. If the single is anything to go by, though, Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave may well propel them headlong into a wider audience.
