Norwegian alternative folk band Katzenjammer comprises four melodic and jubilant female vocalists from Oslo who sing in English. Together, Anne Marit Bergheim, Solveig Heilo, Turid Jörgensen and Marianne Sveen play over twenty instruments, mixing rock, blues, folk and country.
Their first and second studio albums Le Pop and A Kiss Before You Go were highly adventurous and original. Their third, Rockland, succeeds in maintaining s the same feeling of excitement and it’s released on March 2nd, 2015 in the UK on Propeller Recordings.
In ‘Old De Spain’ a vibrant banjo supports mellow gospel bluegrass, followed by ‘Curvaceous Needs’ with its crazy rockabilly sound. ‘My Own Tune’ sounds upbeat and catchy, whilst ‘Driving After You’ a gospel blues number, is fresh and soulful.
There’s fun with ‘Flash in the Dark’, a song which glitters and shines distinctly, and charm to the sexy and intoxicating blues of ‘Bad Girl’.
Marianne Sveen says of artists that she likes: “You don’t listen to them for technical perfection; you listen to them for their sense of creation, for their energy and emotion.” Katzenjammer‘s live performances have been variously described as cute, funky, edgy, daring, curious, elegant and magical. Rockland is polished, distinctive and very inventive and it will be interesting to discover how European audiences respond to their forthcoming tours this year.
