DJ YODA – The Baddest

After years of releasing EPs, mix CDs, cassettes, compositions and more, DJ Yoda is coming out with his third album, Breakfast of Champions this March. Trailing this is a new single, ‘The Baddest’, which sounds like a romping square dance taking place in the middle of a block party.
Showing their familiarity to the production team/live band backing style that makes this track, Mouse Outfit MCs Sparkz & Truthos Mufasa comfortably inject brisk lines into the mix, taking a verse each to muse on their bravados and sharing the choruses to exclaim to the world that they are, indeed, the baddest.
As does the album on the whole, this single features a cast of Yoda-curated musicians that in part make up the 11-strong band behind the project. All over this track, Kitty Daisy jams on a harmonica that holds such a presence that the song would likely carry a completely different feel should it be removed. I personally wouldn’t mind this as maybe then I’d stop getting images of barnyards in my mind; when you take the mix Yoda has created as a whole, however, it’s not hard to appreciate the authoritative sound he achieved with the arrangement.
A thick brass section is another defining feature of this arrangement. Yoda keeps his mixes textured and busy which comes around to mingle with the vocals provided by Mufasa and Sparkz. On the whole, we have a track that provides some fun to be had however I feel (and hope) that the upcoming album will contain some more interesting ideas.
