36 CRAZYFISTS – Also Am I

36 Crazyfists are a band I haven’t seen/heard from in a while – their last release was four years and a record label ago. But they’re back, newly signed with Spinefarm Records and celebrating their 20th year as a band. Most importantly though, they’ve got some new music…
‘Also Am I’ is the name of the new offering, and it’s just what everyone was hoping for: a bit of old, a bit of new and a bit of everything in between. A riff that could be from their debut album opens and, not wanting to mess about with much of an intro or anything, the first verse starts up pretty quick. The iconic voice of Brock Lindow still sounding as it did all those years ago. Screaming, singing – the man has it all.
Heavy and energetic guitar work continues throughout the song, most noticeably the pre-chorus riffs. They’re great. A chorus to rival the best of them and a rare guitar solo in the second half make this one of the better 36 Crazyfists tracks. It is also the first release to feature drummer Kyle Baltus.
While sounding like a natural progression from Collisions And Castaways, ‘Also Am I’ gives a clear nod to the older, perhaps more fan-favoured material. We’ll have to see what the rest of the albumTime And Trauma brings to the table in February 2015.
