SOAK – B a noBody

| On 28, Nov 2014

I was impressed almost immediately when I listened to ‘B a noBody’

It’s refreshing to have an exceptionally talented teenager write a song about something other than being madly in love/heartbroken/hungover. However, as this is the only song I have heard from SOAK, also known as 18 year old Bridie Monds-Watson from Derry, for all I know her next song could include the trifecta and be about falling in love, getting drunk and breaking up with ‘the one’ all in three minutes but even if just for now, it is nice to have something different coming through the speakers.

Having been picked up by BBC introducing and being featured at Glastonbury, SOAK is on the road to a very bright future and there is no doubt that if she keeps at it, we’ll be seeing her on the main stage in years to come, making it ironic that the song that has gotten her noticed is one that discusses never amounting to anything and being a nobody.

SOAK has a sound very similar to Ben Howard, with wistfully beautiful vocals combined with the same kind of chilled out, delicately placed guitar. Nothing sounds forced and even after being produced and made ‘sellable’, the song still sounds as though she’s sitting in her room and pouring her raw thoughts and emotion into music as if no one is listening. This is definitely an artist to keep an eye and an ear on in the near future.

Very Good

Nothing sounds forced and even after being produced and made ‘sellable’, the song still sounds as though she’s sitting in her room and pouring her raw thoughts and emotion into music as if no one is listening.
