TENNIS – I’m Callin’

Tennis - I'm Calling

Tennis’s single ‘I’m Callin”, taken off their recent release Ritual in Repeat puts on display a very natural and well executed progression in the duo’s sound.

More than ever, Tennis are successful in capturing a downhearted tone injected into a dreamy mould, bringing the likes of Destroyer into mind at times.

The producer power here really shines through; the drums are notably crisper and every instrument really cuts through when given singular attention. This is met halfway by the quality of Tennis’s song writing as every part seamlessly unifies to a blissful backdrop to a convictional vocal line.

The video, released a while ago, features both musicians playing a role (though we see much more of Alaina Moore than Patrick Riley) in what feels like a surreal suburban drama. The main highlight comes in the form of Alaina dancing with herself in a choreographed routine that is out of sync just enough to make one contemplate said discrepancies.

I’m not sure if I really ‘get’ what the video is about. There are many little nuances dotted about that beg to be interpreted and some signs that there’s a larger picture relating to Ritual In Repeat’s concept to be appreciated as a whole. What I do know however is that I very much enjoy the convergence of audio and visual and the way in which it the video somehow encourages me to receive the song with a fuller sincerity.
