NONPOINT 2014 - by Justin Reich

AAAmusic: Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Elias Soriano [frontman of Nonpoint]. I was originally born in New Jersey, but raised in South Florida, which is how I found Robb and the band.  Robb was playing locally with a few guys and a friend of his was working with me; we became friends and through a little conversation he learned I sang in high school. So after a few months of being buddies I eventually got an invite to sing with the guys at practice. One night I got the balls to pick up the microphone and the rest is history.

AAAmusic: What inspired you to get into music?

Just the love for the art. The feeling I got the first time I stepped onstage in high school; the feeling I still get to this day when I sit down to write a song. I can truly say there is nothing else that makes me feel the way music does. The genre really chose me. I got into metal late in the lifetime of my listening to music, so I had a lot of catching up to do. It was fun to take a direction in a genre I really knew nothing about. Then after the very first live show, I knew it was what I wanted to do forever.

AAAmusic: What have you done?

I hope I made a difference… In the way people look at their lives, their friends, their loved ones, their memories, their futures. It’s truly all I can ask for. The rest is just perks. Doing what I love and it connecting the way it does through music. What else is there really, other than family? What am I most proud of? That’s easy: our longevity; our connection with our fans.

AAAmusic: What are you like live?

Energy, dipped in electricity, dripping sweat and emotion. Life on 10. Our show is what we take the most pride in and focus our efforts on more than anything. Even our songwriting is affected by our show. We do as we would do live, or we just don’t do. We’ve made that mistake in the past, but you learn. As for touring, we’ve done it all. Summer Tours, Festival Tours, from the highest profile of the year to as dirty and underground as they come. Seen over 20 countries and hoping to add more to the list this year. Played with almost everyone you can think of: Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Megadeath, Disturbed, Mudvayne, Five Finger Death Punch, Korn, Deftones, Sevendust, Hell Yeah and the list also goes on and on…

AAAmusic: What makes you different?

I think our commitment to the music and the band. We work hard and we’re proud of that. As for our sound, it has a little of all of us in there so it spans a lot of different styles.  That and our live show – its what we’d bet all the marbles on if there was one thing we had to rest our careers on: The Show.

AAAmusic: Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

Lately, I download everything…iTtunes.  I like to have the record but I can’t lie and say it’s not convenient to just search and download something you’re looking for. As for my opinion on the services and downloading of music, it’s mute. I’m lucky to have been around to see four format changes and to have been around when people were still selling records. Things change. The trick is how to change with them long enough to survive the tough times. It’s scarier to labels then the bands, really. They got all the investors and crap to answer to. We’re lucky on that side of things.

AAAmusic: What have you been listening to?

A lot of new and old hip hop. Kendrick Lamar and the new Eminem record. That and I’ve been digging into my classic rock collection – it’s been good looking back. As for new stuff, the guys in Wilson are awesome and they throw down live. As do American Fangs, Islander and Gemini Syndrome – they’re also a few good ones coming up.

AAAmusic: What are your aspirations for the future?

World Domination: Europe, Australia, Japan, the Middle East. As for our future, will always be writing, releasing and performing our music. This train don’t stop till the wheels fall off cause they’re fucking dead. Not bald or showing thread… FUCKING DEAD.
