BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend was a storming success. Held at Glasgow this year, 23rd to 25th May, it featured an eclectic schedule of music – just take a look at the three headliners: pop starlet Katy Perry, stadium indie’s biggest band Coldplay, and dance music maestro Tiësto.

Some massive acts descended upon Glasgow for this year’s festie, including the country’s biggest singer-songwriters (Ed Sheeran, Paulo Nutini, Jake Bugg), some huge electronic music artists (Calvin Harris, Sub Focus, Clean Bandit), mammoth rock bands (Kasabian, Kings Of Leon, Bombay Bicycle Club) and, of course, chart-topping pop stars (Lily Allen, Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora).

However, one of the undoubted highlights for the pop fans in attendance was the biggest (pop) band on the planet: One Direction. The world dominating, X Factor-created boy band opened the main stage on Saturday of the festival, playing hits such as ‘Story Of My Life’, ‘Best Song Ever’ and a scream-inducing rendition of ballad ‘You & I’. Watch One Direction perform ‘You & I’ here:

The music festival, which is held once a year and regularly moves location, allocates tickets free (aside from a booking fee) through a sort of online lottery system. This year was only the second time it had been extended to a three day festival, having previously been two days. Grimmy (aka Nick Grimshaw) announced in January that the event would be Glasgow, in celebration of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and would be split into two locations: the Friday was in George Sqaure and geared towards dance music (hence Tiësto!), and the other two days were at Glasgow Green.
