NO AGE – I Won’t Be Your Generator

Los Angeles band No Age brings us a tidy post-punk package in ‘I Won’t Be Your Generator’; taken from their latest album An Object. The track goes back-to basics in its style, beginning with clean Joy Division-inspired bass lines, followed by flickering guitar strikes that are steeped in musical history; all resonating with the essence of late-70s Manchester. The vocals come with a dis-impassioned edge of the Buzzcocks but now with young LA angst.
‘I Won’t Be Your Generator’ is admirably uncomplicated and reproduces something that sounds very English to me; a sober, ‘shoe-gazing’ style. They continue their 70s/ 80s, post-punk salute from album An Object, but as with many bands who awaken past genres, there’s an issue of slipping into replication rather than evolution. No Age have made a nice, straightforward post-punk track that still delivers; but may need to bring it into 2014 slightly more.
