THE RELAYS – Last Night She Said

Northern new comers The Relays debut single ‘Last Night She Said’ could be the long overdue answer to the saturated Indie genre we’ve been waiting for.
Imagine if Alkaline Trio’s angst persona got drunk with The Wombats dance inducing melodies, ‘Last Night She Said’ would be the love child. Opening (for once) with not a completely ripped off Indie verse, the downbeat groove from the drums firmly roots this track whilst singer Adam Redmond’s low and slightly melancholy vocals suit the track sublimely.
Structurally I will concede it’s very much a ‘standard’ that I’ve heard a thousand times before, the classic build towards a bi-polar chorus that seems to express a sense of bittersweet achievement etc, but holy space ghost Batman it’s good to hear some kind of Indie love song that’s not immediately insulting our intelligence.
In all honestly it’s hard to think of anything else that’s noteworthy to mention, it’s a solid take on the Indie-Rock genre, different, good tone/sound, up-beat yet with hints of that good old Grunge angst. Um yeah, certainly a group well worth keeping an eye on. Very nice.
