METZ – Get Off

I never thought I’d come home from orchestra and end up watching a music video for a very noise-indebted rock band made by Chad Van Gaalen. But there you go. METZ’ ‘Get Off’ is a gleefully frenetic number, all flailing, fuzzed-out guitars that clang and ring in furious discord, squalling feedback in a way that almost mirrors the yelping, yowling vocal delivery that sounds like vocalist’s throat is forever on the brink of blowing, and trying to reach a mic placed down a long corridor. So in many ways, quite typical of a Sub Pop band: noisy enough to damage a few amps, but with a hook hidden behind the abrasiveness that, if reincarnated a few times, you might even be able to hum along to. It’s not big, it’s not clever, but there’s something rather enjoyable about the stupidly simple riff and the sheer energy that it is delivered with.
