Al Lewis – Battles

Simple and catchy, singer-songwriter Al Lewis’ album kicks off with his single, Make a Little Room. The straightforwardness of the track could make it seem mediocre but instead it is rather charming. The album is polished and well put together but at the same time it retains an intimate quality. The Truth in Growing Old is another staple for the hopeless romantics. Lewis’ voice mingling with the backing harmony creates a simple tranquillity. It’s calming and unchallenging. The cute little childish drawings on the cd booklet beside the lyrics shows this endearing simplicity. It’s rather sweet, almost twee. The album feels reminiscent of a cheesy version of Noah and the Whale at times.
Instrumentally, across tracks there is a nice mix of strings, piano, drums and harmonica against a staple of folky guitar. Don’t Believe in Magic seems rather reminiscent of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s ‘Do You Believe in Magic?’ in the retro tone of the track. It’s just the way Lewis says ‘magic’; I can’t help thinking that despite the song being quite different.
The only problem with the album is, as harmonic and sweet as it may be, it feels a bit samey. It’s very pleasant to listen to, but it doesn’t really demand your attention. It’d make great background music at a dinner party but there’s something a bit sleepy about the album. It’s very calming but it does not make you think ‘wow’.
