Dr Meaker – Shak Out
aaamusic | On 28, Jan 2013
Out on the 28th of January, Shak out is the latest single from Bristol band, Dr Meaker. The band have received critical acclaim from BBC radio and have been featured on Channel 4’s Skins for their debut album, A Lesson From The Speaker. The single is contemporary and has a catchy funk sound to it. Although it probably won’t have much appeal to fans outside of the rap and R&B genre it is certainly hard to get this song out of your head. The song is polished and well put together and the electronic elements are used to good effect. It’s an energetic and bouncy track to cheer up these dark January afternoons.

Yeah, file this under “one for repeated listens”. Not because it’s too subtle to properly “get” on the first listen, but quite the opposite, it’s so proudly balls-out, so utterly and hilariously gonzo that it might be too ridiculous to handle on the first listen. It certainly was for me, Bristolian producer Dr Meaker’s new single is filled with stabbing synths, loping, barely there bass; a beat that manages to hit the sweet spot between laid back and frenetic so well that it can get someone as white as this writer dancing and some glorious nonsense hurled over the top by guest MC’s Astroid Boys. Once you’ve listened managed to get as much of your head around it as you can it’s pretty fucking awesome, and that’s not even taking into account the ridiculously catchy, dub inflected chorus. Fortunately enough, this has some scope to become massive, and in the pop charts today, that can only be a good thing.
