Ellie Lawson – Insights

There’s nothing especially wrong with this EP from Ellie Taylor, but at the same time, there’s nothing especially remarkable about it either. Mostly comprised from acoustic almost folk-like numbers, and with slightly portentous lyrics, it’s a perfectly pleasant but forgettable listen. Harmonically, the songs are traditional and derivative, but competently rendered with clear understanding about songwriting and structure. The production is clean and attractive, and Taylor’s certainly got an appealing vocal style and a gift for melody. Whether there’s anything dynamic or contemporary enough about this record for it to find a big audience though, I’m not entirely sure.
