Jain Wells – To Be Real

| On 26, Nov 2012

Catchy and poppy, whilst still remaining soulful and heartfelt, Jain Wells begins her album with The Colours of My Heart.

‘Gone are the days of winter’s doubt
In frozen isolation…
A night bird in flight, I’ll follow you
To never ending skies’

The lyrics are visual and dreamy, and don’t feel clichéd or cheesy but are instead rather touching. The album has a feeling of beautiful wistfulness about it; this can be seen in the lyrics, the instrumental mood and Wells’ distinctive vocals. Out of Time continues on this note, mixing dreamy imagery with a sad sense of reality. Wells’ combines a very commercial sound with a very intimate one.

To Be Real has more of an electronic base to it, a style that seems to be very popular at the moment. This is one of the weaker songs on the album, mainly because the electronics give the song a rather flat feel to it. However it does have a very pretty symphonic ending to it.

Holiday is a soft and sweet song with a cute chorus. Again, it could be cheesy but it manages to be pretty touching. Wells’ manages to produce music and lyrics that, although are simple, are very intimate. It’s their simplicity that makes them effective; if it were over the top it would be rather cringe-worthy. I’ll Never Be The Same opens with some very pretty piano and floating vocals. The song has a lovely lingering to it, like the spores of a dandelion-clock.

The album fades out with A New Era, a sense of tranquillity mixed with a wonderfully catchy beat. It has a resonance to it which makes it a good choice of track to end on.

Catchy, commercial pop music but with a beautiful depth to it. Dreamy and full of imagery but certainly not a difficult listen by any means. Recommended.
