Chemical Smile – Thanks For The Company

| On 26, Nov 2012

First thing that hits you with this single are the dominating vocals, which almost have a Nick Cave or Ian Cutis quality to them in their pitch depth. However, they don’t really seem to go with the rest of the song, the echoing backing vocals or the jangling guitar. Overall, on Thanks For The Company, the vocals are a bit off in places.

The guitar interlude in the middle is rather nice, mystical sounding and melodic. The main vocals just sound a bit weird and don’t really seem to go with the sound, they sound almost like gothic growls amongst upbeat pop. Either that or they sound like they were going for an apathetic Morrissey-esque sound that doesn’t work but I can’t quite pin-point why exactly.

Suede Glove works better. The vocals harmonise with the rest of the music here. There are some really nice aspects across both songs, such as the base and guitar. There is something quite like Marmite about the vocals, dark and you either love them or hate them. I can’t quite pick which; there is something very intriguing about them when at first they felt almost absurd. I can definitely hear the influence of Morrissey and Nick Cave.

Overall, utterly intriguing. Catchy with strong and interesting vocals that have a huge presence. Definitely gets you thinking, which I like. So much music I hear makes me nod along and think, ‘that’s nice’ but it doesn’t have as much of an impact on my thinking as this song did. Worth a listen for fans of Joy Division, Nick Cave and Morrissey/The Smiths.
