KOSHEEN – Independence

Bristol based rock, trip hop and break beat group Kosheen is a trio which comprises producers Markee Substance and Darren Decoder together with singer and song writer Sian Evans. The name of the band comes from a combination of the Japanese words for “old” and “new”.
Their fourth album Independence was released on 1st October 2012 on the Kosheen Recordings label.
In Addict a heavy pulsating baseline and synths combine with Sian’s great voice.
Hypnotic Bella Donna is a glam funk Goldfrappesque number and the anarchistic Dependency combines dance, rave and chill out. There’s industrial electronica to Zone 8 and hardcore to Mannequin. Out There has a drifting ambient feel whilst Sian’s fine vocals tend to again become the focal point in Enter.
Kosheen is a confident band with experimental ideas. This well produced album is soft but it also has a dark, intense gothic edge. Fans will probably be elated by Sian’s haunting, emotive and beautiful vocals but some critics may wish that the music was a bit more memorable.
