A succinct and infectious shuffle of a tune, Diggory is a dejected ode to a workaholic soul whose inordinate social life and unbounded substance abuse unwittingly begin to take its toll. Although lyrically awash with a heavy heart, Diggory brims with melodic invention and what’s fast becoming Jennifer’s seemingly effortless way of imbuing a song with a sonic swagger as well as a lyrical wryness about life in the bohemian seaside town of Brighton.
Jennifer Left possesses an imperious musical sensibility that belies her tender age and Diggory is a testament to her ever-progressing song-craft. There’s undeniable swing to Diggory, but Jennifer’s approach is fresh and decidedly non-retro. Complimenting the single and Jennifer’s musical ideology is a neo-folk reworking of New Order’s Temptation, which flaunts her ever-intriguing vocal stylings to grand effect. The hazy jazz-soaked Alternative Diggory Pokery version, drifts along nicely in all its 1940’s inspired glamour, and wouldn’t be out of place soundtracking a perfect night out in a smoky bar on 52nd Street, in midtown Manhattan.
Concluding the bundle of remixes is the jaw-dropping edit by Ninja Tune’s Banks, that takes the song’s inherent celestial nature and blows it wide open to create an interstellar electronic re-imaging.
