Morain – Are We Lost EP

| On 02, Oct 2012

Four-piece band, Morain, have released their debut EP ‘Are We Lost’ and it’s safe to say that based on this EP, they’re going to have a great future ahead of them.
The EP’s title track is also the first on the EP. The vocals on this track, as with all of them to be fair, are spot on. As soon as the drums kicked in, I knew I was going to love not just this song but the entire EP. There’s something about the band’s sound I can’t get enough of. If you were to put them into a certain genre I’d probably put them in indie rock but, really, they’re just great and that’s all that matters.
The chorus is a triumph – it’s as if every aspect of the verse has been building up and then it all explodes when it comes to the chorus. A good explosion though, not the messy kind. I also love any song that has a part where it sounds like a crowd are singing along – partly because it helps me imagine what the band would be like at a gig but partly because it just makes the whole song sound so anthemic and I love me a good anthem.
Next on the EP is a track called ‘Animals’ which opens with a great guitar riff followed by a great bass-line. The talent these boys has is undeniable – great vocals, great sound, great instrument playing, what more could anybody ask for? The chorus is simple but it’s incredibly effective. It’s not as anthemic as ‘Are We Lost’ but it shows you another side to Morain.
Track three is called ‘The World We Live In’ and is just as amazing as the previous two tracks. The vocals on this track probably stood out to me more than on previous tracks, they’re spectacular; though, they’re great on every track, if I’m honest. If anyone doubts the lad’s talent, they must be crazy. The drumming is, once again, incredible. Towards the end of the track, the vocals are highlighted and then the drums come crashing in and give me goosebumps. The guitar solo/riff also managed to do much the same thing.
The final track on the album, ‘Between The Lines’, is, for me, the most upbeat on the EP. It’s the one I imagine people would struggle to not dance to if they were listening to it. One thing I can say about this EP is that all the songs sound like they’d be incredible to hear live at a gig but this track is the one I think would really get the crowd going. I can imagine screaming the chorus until I lose my voice and dancing until my feet hurt.
This EP is loaded with great lyrics, awesome melodies, impeccable vocals, and the sheer talent of the people playing their instruments. Morain remind me slightly of You Me At Six and I predict that they’re going to be just as big, if not bigger, than YMAS, if this EP is anything to go by.
