Jack Savoretti – Breaking The Rules

| On 02, Oct 2012

Jack Savoretti is no newcomer. He’s been bordering the commercial-underground line for five or six years, having released two well-received albums in 2007 and 2009, and had plenty of his music featured on mainstream US shows such as One Tree Hill and Grey’s Anatomy. He even did a duet with limelight lover-hater Sienna Miller earlier this year, which was equally odd and alluring.

‘Breaking The Rules’ is the third single to be taken from his third album – ‘Before The Storm’ – which was released in the summer. It features Jack Savoretti’s usual warm, soulful voice – which sounds like a more gravelly toned James Morrison – and his gentle, understated acoustic guitar strumming, alongside simple, soppy piano keys.

The thing about Savoretti is he is the cliché of a singer-songwriter, but unashamedly so. Romantic and introspective, and big on the pop sensibilities, but a little wet and safe. The melody of ‘Breaking The Rules’ is mighty fine, and he sings with a kind of pained passion that few UK singer-songwriters tend to convincingly convey. So, while it’s nothing new, it’s excellently executed. Certainly worth checking out if you like the aforementioned James Morrison.
