The words ‘Anthem’ and ‘Amazing’ have been used in equal measure to describe Alistair Griffin’s single ‘Just Drive’, part of his new album ‘Albion Sky’. A more fitting describer, though, would be ‘generic’. There’s no disguising the fact that ‘Just Drive’ could have been written by any one of the musicians currently presiding over the pop rock genre. Yes, Griffin’s vocals are good and yes, he has produced some impressive pieces, notably the ‘Hallelujah’ tribute to Mark Viduka. But there’s no escaping the fact that this song is destined to be played in either a teenage girl’s bedroom or during a sentimental back story on the X Factor, or both.
Of course, if generic, formulaic pop rock is your thing, by all means buy the single. But for everybody else, don’t get your hopes up.
