Firefly – Lightships
aaamusic | On 02, Jul 2012
Firefly’s new album Lightships is a compelling mix of country, classical and indie. Their unique breed of folk is tinged with baroque shades and sounds fantastic, in the true sense of the word. Opener I Feel is a real stunner, featuring a delicate yet dramatic piano-violin meshing, topped by some amazing, fairy-like vocals. The entire album plays with these influences, sporting a multi-instrumental sound which can go minimal and sleek (see Lady Laurie, a folk tale topped by light arpeggio), but also epic and ornate, with equally impressive results. A key track is Little Boat, almost a soul number, which shows the breadth of the band’s talents. Lightships creates a world out of its sound and vision, and Firefly’s creativity is promising and exciting.
