MIKE DOUGHTY @ The Union Chapel

Mike Doughty is an American indie and alternative rock singer-songwriter and author. Now solo, he fronted the band Soul Coughing in the 1990s. His last artist album Yes And Also Yes received much critical acclaim.
On 11th June he released The Question Jar Show, a double-disc live album capturing between-song answers to bizarre questions written by fans and put in a jar on stage before the show. The Book of Drugs is the chaotic but engaging story of his life, career, addiction and eight-year tale of his former band.
Here he supported legendary and similarly thoughtful artist Suzanne Vega as part of her UK tour. This accomplished artist and writer performed moving songs in an inspirational and unconventional setting surrounded by beautiful gothic architecture. His music is hip hop influenced folk and Americana blues with funky grooves.
A comfortable master of intimate on-stage conversation, he honestly reflects on his past. The humour is confrontational in style but nevertheless charming and he tells stories about journeys, absurdities and bad experiences.
Mike Doughty has a rare clarity and energy with an upbeat, strident and powerful tone. He’s rhythmically intense and plays haunting cult classic songs where you can explore their deeper meaning. He’s inventive and adventurous but focused an understated way.
