Blood Sport – Fruits: The TDT Recordings

Fruits: The TDT Recordings is an interesting rhythm offering, somewhat nostalgic for days of music long gone, kicking off with the impassioned opening track Palomar and establishing itself as a curiosity amongst the underground music scene. It’s indulgently drum and baritone heavy but still a solid and interesting release. Unfortunately it doesn’t have much consistency and the sporadic nature of the recording often results in a lack of coherency in the middle of songs and especially inbetween them.
Warm Hammer, the third track out of four, is almost reminiscent of The Horrors, with some underplayed vocals dominated by staccato guitars adhering to tight but adventurous rhythm threaded through some vague musical concepts. Whilst they seem comfortable in their niche, the recordings aren’t particularly spectacular – they’re good, but could be great with a little more time and thought applied. Ode To Finn and Jake is the most concise track and it shows off the group’s wide range of influences. It’s a strong, spontaneous release that packs a lot of character into a tiny package, but they could definitely do with tightening things up a bit. The Sheffield band have a lot of character and raw talent but they need to pin some of it down and work on some more refined tracks before they’ll really start picking up momentum.
