Holly Walker is a singer-songwriter from London and has released her EP through her own record label label Hungry Bird Records. Walker has clearly championed the art of “doing it yourself” in the music industry, with four 7 track EP’s already under her belt that came about through a YouTube project whereby Walker wrote, performed and uploaded a different song every day for a month. Her original clips and unique sound won her a host of online fans who have been eagerly awaiting an official release from this talented artist. This has come in the form of “Bedroom Bangers” a four track EP that serves as a perfect introduction to Walkers music.
The EP is wonderfully witty from the get go with Walkers observant lyrics acting as the driving force behind the songs and drawing in the listener. Opening track Modern Life is an infectious song that is relatively stripped back- you could easily imagine it being played with just vocals and piano but the EP version is slightly more produced giving the song a more professional, polished sound. “Penelope” gives further insight into Holly Walkers sound- her strong, self assured vocals remind me a little of Fiona Apple and this makes for a refreshing change from the pop route that most young female singers seem to take these days. Overall this EP is definitely worth a listen, I wouldn’t be surprised to see lots more of Holly Walker in 2012.
