The Daydream Club – Neon Love Song [Part II]

| On 26, May 2012

Okay, Burberry prejudice aside (this being a chosen track for an “eyewear campaign”) I’ll have to say that as far as nostalgic and luscious pop goes, The Daydream Club’s ‘Neon Love Song [Part II]’ is rather something. It doesn’t go for the kick, but the expansive, melancholy harmonised vocals give an undeniable gravitas to the mesmeric lyricism, and the piano and orchestra behind create a beautiful backdrop. Everything here is crystal-clear, with a heft behind it that is somewhat reminiscent of being taught to sing ‘Scarborough Fair’ as an impressionable child. That same sense of being involved in… something. Something big. The Daydream Club do not for a second seem satisfied with the pure understatement: this is their shot at timeless songwriting, and I would have to say that although it is perhaps a little overly sedate at points, there’s a sombre poetry at play. The contrast between the less spectacular album version and the intense instrumentation of the reworked version is quite something, even if the electro remix feels unnecessary.
It’s a bit “beige wave” in its tuneful slowness, but all the same it is touching and well put together. If you must go beige, you should do it right. The Daydream Club have the perfect shade to ensure you are not lost to the world of music.
