Mummy Short Arms – Silicone Dream

| On 09, May 2012

If you’re a fan of Kings of Leon which, let’s face it, most of us are thanks to ‘Sex on Fire’, chances are you’ll at least appreciate Mummy Short Arms’ latest single ‘Silicone Dream’. Whether you’ll like it or not depends entirely on whether you’re a fan of the constant shouty singing style they seem to deploy within the song.
Usually, the lyrics would be spoken about and there would be some kind of discussion as to whether they were good or not but the truth is that, with this song, a lot of time it’s hard to even understand what was being said. Actually, that’s not necessarily true – it makes me not want to listen to it really. This is all thanks to the not-really-singing-but-not-really-shouting technique the lead singer used throughout the song. On the rare occasion I did hear lyrics, they were nothing special but they’re still a miles better than a lot of the lyrics being used in songs nowadays.
One thing that was hard not to love about this song, though, was the instruments being played; namely the guitar and drums. There’s some great little guitar riffs that, much like the lyrics, are nothing special on their own but when paired with great drumming technique, it adds something to the song that nobody could deny. There’s something about a good drum beat that manages to give me goosebumps and this song definitely managed that.
Even if the lyrics aren’t particularly catchy, the guitar riff at the beginning of the song will inevitably get caught in your head and you’ll find it playing on a loop, over and over again. Good work, guitarist!
As for the video, the concept is a really neat idea. You’re essentially watching the video being played on some kind of old television set. What’s actually being played is so incredibly weird though, and I mean that in a good way. Whilst a lot of it doesn’t seem to go along with the lyrics or the song itself, it does capture your attention and it definitely makes it rememberable.
There are clips of the band playing as part of a montage of other clips including Frankenstein’s monster, Star Trek, and I think possibly Godzilla – Star Trek being my personal favourite. There’s also an old man who pulls a funny face and, let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a video with that in.
