The Frolick @ Classical Revolution, The Green Carnation

The Frolick is a London Baroque ‘n’ Roll ensemble with a modern innovative style, but also the sounds of an authentic 18th century classical performance.
It has a cellist, virtuoso violinists, lute and baroque guitar, triple and Celtic harps and an English songstress. They are directed by Emma Curtis and Andrew Maginley.
Here they headlined Classical Revolution’s April show, performing cabaret style songs from their acclaimed prize-winning album Calliope. These songs, once popular in the pubs and coffee houses of Handel’s London, were returned to a tavern type atmosphere.
Emma Curtis is a smart and versatile singer with a huge range and flexibility. She’s also an actress with unique sense of character. She passionately sings with great knowledge and enthusiasm about diverse social, political and cultural issues and her outstanding voice is strong, clear and expressive.
The Frolick are great fun. They’re captivating and impressive. They have a chic, sexy and joyous modern edge that breaths life and colour into neglected music. They’re humorous one moment and sad the next.
These beautifully crafted and inspirational songs have great charm and create a vivid picture. The distinctive lute playing of the excellent and talented Andrew Maginley complemented these fine, sensitive and intelligent musicians.
