Mr Mitchell’s first solo single On The Rooftop builds on grey, scattered beats, to allow the storyline to dominate – “I am from where you hear siren sounds” is the second line of a lyric with poem-like structure, presenting pain-driven images of East London, where Mitchell has his roots. The female vocals which come in as a chorus help everything come into focus, bringing to a climax the theme of escapism. The female and male vocals juxtapose in such a beautiful way you are instantly drawn into the song’s world. The gritty realism and the bold identity shown make this an amazingly powerful release.
