The Wedding Present – Valentina

I have always liked ‘The Wedding Present’. They have a moody quality that appeals to my heart swings. The monotony of the second track ‘You Jane’ are a delight and shows they have really gone with the times with this album. They haven’t got as much praise as ‘The Smiths’, but I think they appeal as much; they set the scenes of the generation.
If we didn’t have ‘The Wedding Present’ a lot of bands of this generation would not exist cause, they are really influential. There is nice story-telling about a romance in the band with a song ‘Meet Cute’, which has bass lines that remind me of Oxford band ‘Adjustable’ who later became ‘Dive:Dive’ .
There are points on the album where I wish they would go to a little more upbeat, but they
are known for misery so why do they want to mess with the formula and the song. ‘The girl from the DDR’ shows why. This album is long worth the wait, and if you love early 90’s indie like ‘Gene’ and ‘Morrissey’ and of course ‘The Smiths’, I would strongly recommend you pick up this record because it is ten songs of slow burst misery and would really appeal to you.
