Blondes – Blondes

Made up of university pals Sam Haar and Zach Steinman, Blondes release their self-titled debut album for RVNG Intl. on February 6, 2012. The album consists of 8 tracks that seem to be coupled in two’s as the titles are “lover” “hater” “business” “pleasure” “wine” “water” “gold” “amber”. A unique idea I suppose that could only really be pulled off on an electronic/ house album like this one. Blondes do not have lyrics to fall back on so the tracks become conceptual- relying on the beats and melody to portray the contrasting themes that they created.
A recurring theme on this album is the slow-burning beginnings which develop into lush, heavy almost trance-like climaxes. Blondes use their equipment and machines in distinctive understated way. The beats are minimal at times with the heavy use of synth and pop based bass lines giving the songs that modern edge- something that keeps you listening to the track and waiting for the payoff at the end. Blondes have released a video for “Wine” one of the most commercial tracks on the album- the surreal, wacky video perfectly captures the spirit of this thematic tune. For electronic/ house/techno lovers this album offers something different that is sure to see Blondes explode in popularity in the next few months.
