Little Roy is a legendary reggae singer from Kingston, Jamaica.

His covers album of 10 Nirvana classic songs, Battle for Seattle, was released in September 2011 on Ark Recordings. Little Roy’s voice has a similar grain to that of Kurt Cobain but he had never heard Nirvana prior to this recording.

 

Lithium is the first single to be released from this curious, warm and playful album. It’s another odd and unusual attempt to produce a novel reggae cover and it creates an uplifting tone to remove you from the murky, gritty and depressing feel of the original classic.

 

It’s possible to praise Little Roy for a new positive, upbeat and refreshing approach , but some Kurt Cobain fans will feel this cover will do little to enhance the original grunge anthem with its bleak genius, hard hitting tone and mysterious lyrics.
