The Jar Family are acoustic folkers with more of a grip than you’d expect. In For A Penny is their latest single and, although it’s built on an unplugged strum and with a lot of whistling filling the gaps, it still comes across as gritty and unsubordinate. It must be the easy confidence of having a line such as “In for a penny, out for a pound, I like the way it sounds” as your chorus. I’m sure that Wonderful Tonight bit of guitar solo at the beginning also helped. On top of all this, is a voice that’s a mixture of cigarettes and wisdom. The result is song that disguises misery and dirt as playful simplicity.
