aaamusic | On 20, Nov 2011
The Callas are Aris (guitar, vocals) and Lakis (drums, bass, vocals) Ionas brothers and artistic collaborators (MA Chelsea College of Art, London) and Annita Callasette (keys, vocals, drums). Although they get a little help from The Callasettes, an ever-changing line up of backing muses.
The last few years they have played all over Europe including: Indietracks Festival (Derbyshire, UK), The Great Escape Festival (Brighton, UK) Artrocker Magazine (London,UK), The Fly (London,UK), Club Fandango at The Monarch (London,UK), Barfly (London,UK), Alma Enterprises gallery (London,UK), Athens Biennial, Sala Apolo in Barcelona, Espacio menos uno in Madrid, Taktfrei fest (Berlin), De Roode Bioscoop,(Amsterdam, Netherlands), Fieldgate Gallery (London, UK). They have performed live in churches, flats, boats, mountains, toilets and with bands such as Au revoir Simone, You Say party! We Say Die!, The Wedding Present, Television Personalities, Stereo Total and The Victorian English Gentlemens Club.
he band The Callas, is the tip of an artistic enterprise that has seen the brothers invited to exhibit their artwork and play at Dakis Joannou DESTE foundation, Athens Biennial, AMP gallery, Yinka Shonibare Space, The Breeder gallery, etc. They directed the video for the Television Personalities’ ‘The Good Anarchist’ in 2008.
The last few months saw The Callas exhibiting their artworks in Faggionato Fine Art (London, UK), playing live with Grinderman after a Jim Sclavunos invitation, releasing a split flexi single with The Victorian English Gentlemens Club (This is Fake DIY records) and finally releasing their album “Objekt”
The album is an obscure objekt in EU.of desire with unique handmade covers. Scruffy but icy at the same time, creates a D.I.Y. atmosphere of magic, lust, alchemy and dark “joie de vivre”. From the eccentricity of The Fall, the weirdopop of Televison Personalities and the noise pop of Jesus and Mary Chain through the Fluxus performances, No Wave movement and avant garde Constructivist artists The Callas create their LO-FI GEOMETRY dogma.
