The Standards – Mice

| On 19, Nov 2011

I suppose this gets a resounding “actually, it’s okay” from me. As soon as I heard the indie-pop wibbling in the instruments, and some vaguely Morrissey-inspired vocals, I was armed and set to pan this track to kingdom come, but there’s something rather satisfying behind all the thick syrupiness of it all, much like a musical flapjack. Its total radio-friendly pop, with warm bass and even a glockenspiel, but the delivery of the song has a pleasing elastic snap to it, and the hooks are catchy, so in many respects, it’s a rather nicely-crafted pop song. If you want something to have on in the background to a smiling soft-focus montage of nostalgia in that kooky rom-com you’ve planned, you’ve just hit gold. As for the rest of us, I think we could probably deal with the three-times-a-week exposure to it when we walk into a shop that has the radio on.
