The first time I reviewed Jim Kroft it was a night in Hoxton, more than one year ago. Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was about to come out and Jim had been living in Berlin for 2 years already. I spent that night thinking about the inspirations that made Jim’s music so fascinating, from The Beatles to David Bowie. Such task was much easier this time, when Jim reminded me, well, just of Jim Kroft.
From the first notes of See The Darkness Grows it was clear how Jim brought his music to a whole new level. First of all, the fantastic arrangements of Ben Merritt provide even more depth and consistence to Jim’s songs. The uplifting One Sees The Sun sounds denser and the atmosphere grows with Memoirs From The Afterlife, where Jim shows a growth not only in personality, but in vocal terms as well.
Last single The Jailer is perfectly executed, proving how Jim is not only doing “his best”, as he himself states in the song’s refrain.
Much more than that, Jim’s show is a biography in ten acts, where the Scot opens his hearth in a confession of irony and wit. There’s a soft harmony between voice and instruments, completed by poetic lyrics and a manifest awareness of Jim’s own skills.
Waiting for the second album, that will include next single If I’m Born Too Late, The Jailer and Something Missing…, this night in Brick Lane provided further evidence Jim Kroft’s potential is real and ready to explode.
