Crowns – Kissing Gates / Whose Pint’s Whose

“Charming” isn’t really a word one would associate with a band who have supported The King Blues, but this debut single from Cornwall based indie-folkers Crowns has it in spades. Based around the mandolin this has everything that Mumford and Sons has made uncool, as in, four part harmonies, the aforementioned mandolin, heartily strummed acoustic guitars and manfully bruised hearts, and gives it a shot of impossibly youthful exuberance that can’t be replicated anywhere else. The two songs cover a lot of ground themselves, the A Side a fairly straightforward country scramble while the B side saunters along on a more English folk styled and while they might sound slightly similar, the melodies are so fresh and the feel of the tracks are so welcoming that one can’t help but forgive them. A sterling debut by a band that seems to have an awful lot of promise.
