Norwegian native Torgny (Torgny K. Amdam) is set to release the Oslo, 31. August EP; his musical contribution to the Cannes Film Festival-debuted film ‘Oslo, August 31st’ (dir. Joachin Trier), preparing for its UK premiere on Nov 4th.
The EP, to be released in the UK on 31st October and the US the following day, features three brand new tracks from the musical mastermind behind well-known Norwegian hardcore act Amulet and one of the continent’s first ever straight-edge acts Onward. But not to mislead in any way, Torgny’s recent works are much more electronically influenced, ranging from tender melody to the more club aggressive, as well as owing something to the glory days of the dark side of 1980’s pop music.
In reference to his debut album ‘Chameleon Days’, Torgny considers his kinship to be “with artists that are in a constant debate with their signature, artists who are willing to challenge their trademarks without necessarily losing them”. In other words, Torgny identifies with artists that view their work as more of a discursive and exploratory practice – perhaps the likes of Radiohead, or Björk, maybe PJ Harvey or even David Bowie – rather than as a manifestation of a genre set in stone. This is certainly indicative of the Oslo, 31. August EP, which provokes artist comparisons with Röyksopp, Apparat and even elements of Daft Punk.
Oslo, 31. August EP will be released as a digital EP through Telemachus on 31st October 2011. The film ‘Oslo, August 31st’ will make its UK premiere on Nov 4th.
