Don Scannell: Mystery released 05th December 2011

| On 23, Oct 2011

Don Scannell hails from the South coast of Ireland where from an early age he developed a love of the blues. With the help of local piano teacher (Irish musician and subsequent radio presenter Eamon Keane) this turned into a daily ritual of playing and throughout the remainder of his school years Don continued to expand his love of music from Beethoven to Simon and Garfunkel along with on-going involvement in various choirs.

Mystery is the lead single taken from debut album Three Silver Pieces and clearly displays Don’s love of harmony in the vocal melodies. Weaving their way through low-tuned steel-string guitar, gentle instrumentation and breakbeat rhythms this song is one of compassion.

In the words of Don ‘It’s one human being seeing another go from a troubled state, to a point of genuine happiness, then insisting they celebrate the fact. I think most adults will have experienced dark days (‘black inside’) until persisting through to days that ‘glow’. The Mystery aspect is the awe the helper experiences in seeing how someone can change over time, almost miraculously, and the mystery of loving someone despite their condition.

The video for Mystery captures the ethereal nature of Don’s music and features puppets from London’s infamous ‘Little Angel Theatre’ (one of only 3 building based puppet theatres in England)  operated by Ronnie Le Drew famous for his work alongside Jim Henson on the 80’s hit film Labrynth, who said

‘Mystery features two of Little Angel’s marionette puppets, Kai and Gerda. The puppets are operated by Ronnie Le Drew, who continues to work at Little Angel on shows and educational courses. The puppetry is fantastic, and the music is very catchy. Enjoy watching it, we did!’

Three Silver Pieces was written and arranged at Rollover Studios by Don and features contributions from cellist Roger Holtom, bassist / drummer Martin Savale (of Asian Dub Foundation ) and studio guru Wiggzaro ( Andrew Wise )
