Kidda – The Whistler

Starting with what could easily be the middle buildup from ‘Hey Jude’, Kidda has landed on his feet here with ‘The Whistler’. Glasslike female vocals glimmer over a thick bassline, an electrified synth rhythm and of course, a prominent whistled melody. Kidda really knows how to play with dynamics, with a truly euphoric chorus that includes a horn section along with everything else, and moments where the bass and synths drop away to leave an almost physically tangible gap for the whistling to take the fore for a brief second, before everything kicks in again. The bridge builds layer upon layer of 80s pop hit and 00s club filler in an unlikely yet appealing foundation before the final chorus bursts into life in a suitably glitter-filled manner.
Blending old school soul-pop with new clubbing blood (yes I am wondering how I just wrote that phrase too) I would have to hold up my hands and say that here, Kidda has achieved that rare thing: a solid slice of pop that is inoffensive beyond measure, yet eminently accessible and indeed likeable.
