HMV Next Big Thing Mike Marlin launched his debut album ‘Nearly Man’ earlier this year picking up support from 6music, regional radio and widespread acclaim online. He toured the UK twice round before heading straight back into the basement studio to record his second album. Inspiration was not in short supply: Mike emerged from the basement 3 months later with a collection of new songs named ‘Man On The Ground’.
Lead single ‘The Magician’ reveals a darker more accomplished sound for Marlin, setting the standard for the forthcoming record and expressing a more personal and ambitious approach to song writing. Swelling from subtle and sad to heart felt and grand, the track’s dynamic has been distinctively captured by producer Catherine Marks, known for her work with Alan Moulder and Flood on projects with artists such as The Vaccines, Interpol, Foals, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave.
In the words of Marlin: ‘We know that magic is an illusion created by skill and trickery, but we agree to believe and applaud when the magician deceives us. The contract is unspoken but simple: “Lie to me, but don’t let me down”. The song is about the unspoken agreements in all relationships, or at least in the ones that work.’
Following on from the success of Mike’s viral video hit ‘Play That Game’ The Magician video features some of the best close up magicians in the UK today and to bring the experience of music and illusion together Mike hosts a launch party in London’s historic Hoxton Hall on September 28th featuring live performances from both Mike Marlin and a hand picked line up of magicians to confuse and delight.
