Smokey Bastard – Yuppie Dracula

| On 02, Oct 2011

Well, to be frank, any song with a Nosferatu send-up as its music video immediately has my attention, and when it’s played by a Flogging Molly-esque folk punk band, there’s few ways ‘Yuppie Dracula’ could go wrong. On the one hand, the video, with its tongue-in-cheek humour and brilliant execution that convincingly evokes the original silent film, is stellar. On the other hand, the track works exceedingly well by itself. Blending the boozy punk growl of any number of bands on the scene with a flurry of furious folk instrumentation towards the end, the momentum of the song and its social commentary with one foot buried deep in the ridiculous mean that the listener can’t help but be swept along until the giddy end.

If there’s only one departure from the norm in your Halloween mix this year, let it be this definite treat of a track be it.
