The Narcoleptic Dancers – Never Sleep

| On 26, Sep 2011

Melody Van Kappers and Anton Louis Jr were born 10 years apart and grew up in different countries (Holland and France respectively). They were completely oblivious to each other’s existence until their father fell ill and organised a party in 2000 where the long lost siblings were reunited and the beginning of a musical relationship was born.

On “Never Sleep” their debut album, you might expect to hear a sense of bitterness, disappointment, regret- however this couldn’t be further from their sound. The Narcoleptic Dancers have a fresh, optimistic and retro sound similar to that of She& Him or The Mouldy Peaches who they cite as an influence.

Most of the tracks on “Never Sleep” are built around lush, gentle melodies with a folk vibe to be heard. Lead single Rastakraut is a cheery song with that definitely belongs in an indie movie trailer. “Not Evident” is a highlight as it is completely infectious and features a tambourine, ukulele and hand claps.  “Sweet and Soft” is a lovable song which showcases the lush and sugary vocals by Melody Van Kappers.

Although this album has won me over with its kooky melodies and feel-good energy, I must admit that at times the lyrics can be frustratingly repetitive especially if you listen to the album as a whole. However, when each song is isolated the sweet vocals by Melody, the kooky acoustic guitars and occasional organ appearance make it impossible not to tap your foot and sing along.
